Strings of Passion: The Legacy of Don Becker
A John Kind Studios Documentary

Directed, filmed, and produced by John Ravenell Jr., Strings of Passion follows violinist and educator Don Becker, a pioneer of the Suzuki Method in New England. Becker studied directly under Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in Japan between 1983 and 1986, earning his official teaching diploma before returning to Boston to establish the Suzuki Institute of Boston — the first and only program in New England personally authorized by Dr. Suzuki himself.

Through decades of teaching, Becker has inspired countless students with his belief that “every child has ability.” His work embodies Suzuki’s philosophy of nurturing talent through love, patience, and discipline.

This documentary explores Becker’s lifelong dedication to music education, the founding of his school, and the quiet power of a teacher whose passion continues to shape generations.

Produced and directed by John Ravenell Jr. for John Kind Studios, this film continues the studio’s mission to spotlight creators whose passion and authenticity define their art.

Directed, produced, and edited by John Kind Studios, this film reflects the power of creativity to unite and inspire dialogue around art and community in Boston.

The Act of Rebounding (2020)

An Official Documentary Film by John Ravenell Jr
Presented by John Kind Studios LLC

The Act of Rebounding is a powerful, on-the-ground documentary chronicling how leaders across Boston and Cambridge adapted in real time to the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the city shut down and uncertainty spread, local voices rose to confront a new reality—finding ways to lead, connect, and rebuild through resilience and community.

Conceived, directed, filmed, edited, and produced entirely by John Ravenell Jr, the film was captured during the earliest months of the pandemic, when stepping outside meant genuine personal risk. Working independently through his production company, John Kind Studios LLC, Ravenell documented the transformation of civic and creative life as it unfolded—from the first socially distanced interviews to the rise of virtual connection through Zoom and remote collaboration.

Although Audible’s representatives held an initial meeting to hear the idea, The Act of Rebounding was fully envisioned and executed by Ravenell, whose original concept and production laid the foundation for what would later appear in Audible’s branded presentation. This version restores the complete story as it was meant to be seen: a filmmaker’s firsthand account of leadership, adaptation, and the human drive to persevere under pressure.

The Act of Rebounding stands as both a record of a city in crisis and a declaration of creative ownership—proof that vision, integrity, and courage still matter in the making of true documentary storytelling.

The Breath & The Wind: University Wind Ensemble of Boston College
A Collaborative Short Film
Story and Audio Direction by John “John Kind” Ravenell Jr
Produced in association with The Loop Lab

The Breath & The Wind is an audiovisual performance blending live symphonic music, movement, and cinematic storytelling. Conceptually co-developed and audio-directed by John Ravenell Jr, the project interprets composer Katahj Copley’s original composition through a lens of reflection, rebirth, and emotional clarity.

The film brings together the University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Sebastian Bonaiuto, choreography by Blue Richardson, and the visual collaboration of Taijai Slaughter as Director of Photography. Ravenell’s creative influence shaped the narrative rhythm and emotional through-line of the piece, emphasizing the tension between silence, breath, and human connection through sound.

Originally produced during his collaboration with The Loop Lab, The Breath & The Wind stands as an example of collective artistry that draws on Ravenell’s unique storytelling style and production sensibility. This version highlights his authorship in the soundscape design, narrative concept, and the overall tone of the film’s creative direction.

The Met Gala: Solstice Literary Magazine Virtual Event (Winter 2020)
Directed & Edited by John Ravenell Jr

In the winter of 2020, as the world continued to navigate lockdowns and social distancing, Solstice Literary Magazine transformed its annual Met Gala into a fully virtual experience. Directed and edited by John Ravenell Jr, this remote production united celebrated poets, musicians, and literary leaders in an online showcase that blended performance, storytelling, and community in a time of distance.

Working closely with the Solstice team, Ravenell crafted the visual and narrative flow of the event — coordinating remote participants, designing the digital presentation, and ensuring that every performance carried the warmth and humanity the moment demanded. The result was both a creative innovation and a symbol of artistic endurance during one of the most challenging years in recent history.

Featuring performances by Dzvinia Orlowsky, Artress Bethany White, Robbie Gamble, Ewa Cruschiel, Richard Hoffman, Adrian Matajka, and Richard Blanco, with musical contributions from Phoenix Fya, John Kind, Roy Nathanson, and Aidan Scrimgeour, The Met Gala stands as a testament to creative collaboration, resilience, and the power of art to connect us—even in isolation.
