Overview: In the wake of the George Floyd tragedy and the Black Lives Matter movement, I embarked on a project titled "What's Going On?" that aimed to capture the profound impact on our communities. This project was an exploration of the sociological and psychological aspects of what was happening in black neighborhoods during a time of heightened racial tension and the additional burden of COVID-19 restrictions.
Challenges: The project faced multiple challenges, including safely capturing the essence of these communities during the pandemic, dealing with emotional and sensitive subject matter, and creating a cohesive narrative that would genuinely reflect the struggles of the people.
Approach: The project began with extensive research, understanding the neighborhoods, and building trust within the communities. I attended and documented Black Lives Matter marches and the consequences of COVID-19 restrictions, such as the removal of basketball rims that negatively impacted the youth in these areas.
Execution: The project involved capturing powerful images and pairing them with evocative poetry that encapsulated the emotions, struggles, and resilience of these communities. Each photo and poem served as a window into the world of these neighborhoods.
Results: "What's Going On?" received critical acclaim and was commissioned by Artplace America, showcasing it on their platform. It sparked meaningful discussions about racial tensions, community resilience, and the impact of the pandemic. This project was a testament to the power of visual storytelling and poetry in conveying deep sociological narratives.
